About
Meaning “The Peak of the Wind” in Gaelic, Sgòr Gaoith (1,118 m) is one of the most dramatic summits in the Cairngorms, famed for its breathtaking cliffs that plunge almost vertically down to the shining waters of Loch Einich far below. This is a mountain walk that combines wild moorland, expansive views, and a spectacular finish on a high cliff edge.
The route begins gently from the Glen Feshie car park, winding through fragrant Caledonian pine forest, home to red squirrels, crossbills, and capercaillie. Emerging onto the open hillside, the path climbs steadily across heather slopes and onto the high plateau, where the sense of space is immense.
At the summit, the view is simply unforgettable. The cliffs of Sgòr Gaoith fall away dramatically at your feet, with Loch Einich glistening in the depths below, and across the void, the jagged ridges of Braeriach dominate the skyline. To the west, the rolling Monadhliath stretch into the distance, while on a clear day, Ben Nevis can sometimes be glimpsed far beyond.
This is a rewarding hike that showcases both the gentler side of the Cairngorms—ancient forest and wide moors—and its most dramatic mountain scenery.
