Coffin Route
Winding gently through the heart of Wordsworth country, the Coffin Route is a tranquil and atmospheric trail that links the villages of Grasmere and Rydal, tracing the ancient path once used to carry the dead to St. Oswald’s Church for burial. Today, it's a peaceful, history-rich walk through classic Lakeland scenery. The route begins in Grasmere, passing the poet William Wordsworth’s grave and meandering up through woodland, open fellside, and moss-covered stone walls. Along the way, you’ll spot flat, coffin-shaped rocks where pallbearers once rested their load—quiet reminders of the path’s sombre origins. As you walk, panoramic views unfold over Grasmere Water, Rydal Water, and the surrounding fells. The trail also skirts past Rydal Hall and its ornate gardens and waterfalls—well worth a short detour—before descending gently into Rydal village. The route is mostly on good paths with a few rocky sections, and can be walked in either direction or turned into a circular walk by returning along the lakeshore.
