Morrone

Overlooking the historic village of Braemar, Morrone may not be the highest peak in the Cairngorms, but it offers one of the most rewarding short hill walks in the region. At 859 meters (2,818 ft), this Corbett delivers expansive views with relatively little effort—and is often far quieter than the nearby Munros. The walk begins gently from Braemar, winding through fields and patches of native woodland before joining a well-defined track that ascends steadily onto the open hillside. The landscape quickly transforms from pastoral to wild, with heather-clad slopes, sweeping moorland, and, on occasion, red deer grazing in the distance. The final stretch zigzags up to the summit, where you'll find a radio mast and shelter cairn. From here, the panoramic views are spectacular: the Cairngorm plateau stretches out to the north, Lochnagar looms to the southeast, and the River Dee winds through the valley far below. This is an ideal hike for those based in Braemar who want a half-day mountain experience without the remoteness or time commitment of a full Munro. In winter, it can make for a fantastic snowshoe or winter walk with the right gear.
