Meall a' Bhuachaille
Meall a’ Bhuachaille, meaning “Hill of the Shepherd” in Gaelic, is a classic Cairngorms hillwalk that delivers stunning Highland views with a relatively short and straightforward ascent. At 810 meters (2,657 ft), it’s not the tallest peak in the region, but its isolated position makes the summit views truly outstanding. The hike begins at the Glenmore Visitor Centre, winding through peaceful Caledonian pine forest before reaching the emerald waters of An Lochan Uaine (the Green Lochan)—a small, enchanting loch steeped in local folklore. From here, the trail climbs steadily past the Ryvoan Bothy, a rustic mountain shelter, and onto open moorland. The ascent to the summit is clear and well-defined, rising across heather-covered slopes to a broad ridge. As you gain height, panoramic views unfold across the Cairngorm plateau, Loch Morlich, and the surrounding forests and glens. On a clear day, you can see as far as Ben Macdui and the Monadhliath Mountains. This is an ideal hike for those wanting a half-day hillwalk with big scenery and minimal technical challenge. It's a great introduction to the Cairngorms and a popular choice year-round—even in winter with the right equipment.
