Aira Force
Tumbling 65 feet through a mossy, wooded gorge, Aira Force is one of the Lake District’s most enchanting natural wonders. Set amid ancient woodland on the western shores of Ullswater, this dramatic waterfall has inspired poets and painters for centuries—including William Wordsworth, who wrote about its “torrent hoarse.” The well-maintained circular walk begins at the National Trust car park and leads you through a fairytale-like forest of oak, ash, and towering Douglas firs. Along the way, you’ll follow bubbling streams, cross picturesque stone bridges, and wind past viewpoints where the thunder of the falls echoes all around. The main viewing area brings you face-to-face with the waterfall as it plunges into a deep, fern-fringed pool below. Venture a little further and you'll find quieter paths leading to High Force, a smaller cascade higher up the beck, or continue into Gowbarrow Fell for panoramic views over Ullswater. Aira Force is more than just a waterfall—it’s a magical blend of nature, history, and tranquility, perfect for families, photographers, or anyone looking for a short and memorable Lakeland adventure.
