About
Nestled just above Glencoe village, Glencoe Lochan is a peaceful forest walk with a stunning mountain backdrop. Originally created in the 19th century by Lord Strathcona, who planted North American trees to ease his Canadian wife’s homesickness, the lochan today offers tranquil trails through towering conifers with reflections of the surrounding peaks shimmering in the water.
There are three waymarked routes to choose from: the Lochan Trail, an easy circuit around the water’s edge; the Woodland Trail, winding through serene forest; and the slightly more challenging Mountain Trail, which climbs a little higher to give superb views over the glen and Loch Leven.
Though just minutes from Glencoe village, the lochan feels calm and secluded—a gentler alternative to the rugged mountains of the glen. It’s perfect for families, casual walkers, or anyone looking for a quiet stroll with dramatic Highland scenery as a backdrop. At sunset, when the Pap of Glencoe glows above the still water, it’s an unforgettable sight.
