About

The Coffin Route is a gentle yet historic trail linking the villages of Grasmere and Rydal, weaving through woodland, open fellside, and charming Lakeland scenery. Its name comes from centuries past, when coffins were carried along this very path from Rydal to the consecrated ground at St Oswald’s Church in Grasmere. Today, it’s a much-loved walk for its rich history and its beauty. The route passes by stone walls, mossy tracks, and old farmsteads, with constant views across Rydal Water and Grasmere. Along the way, you’ll find Wordsworth connections—passing close to Rydal Mount, the poet’s home for over 35 years, and not far from Dove Cottage in Grasmere. It’s a walk filled with atmosphere: part woodland stroll, part cultural journey, and part lakeside ramble. With little ascent, it’s accessible to most walkers and makes a perfect leisurely outing that can be enjoyed in either direction.
