About
Perched on a rocky headland overlooking the deep waters of Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle is one of the Highlands’ most dramatic and atmospheric ruins. Once among the largest castles in Scotland, it has witnessed over 1,000 years of history—raids, clan battles, and Jacobite uprisings—before falling into ruin in the 17th century.
Today, the castle’s crumbling walls and mighty Grant Tower remain an evocative reminder of its turbulent past. From the battlements, you’ll enjoy sweeping views across Loch Ness, with its dark, mysterious waters stretching into the distance. It’s one of the finest vantage points for spotting the legendary Loch Ness Monster—if you’re lucky!
The site includes a modern visitor centre with exhibitions, a film presentation, and a café, making it an excellent stop for both history enthusiasts and families. Walking among the ruins, it’s easy to imagine medieval life here, with great banquets, fierce sieges, and the constant watch over one of Scotland’s most strategic lochs.
