About
The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge is one of the UK’s best-known endurance hikes, summiting the three highest mountains in the Yorkshire Dales—Pen-y-ghent (694 m), Whernside (736 m), and Ingleborough (723 m)—in a single demanding loop. Covering 24 miles of rugged Dales countryside, the route combines steep ascents, high-level ridges, and sweeping valley views, making it both a physical and scenic adventure.
The challenge typically begins at Horton-in-Ribblesdale, with a steep climb up Pen-y-ghent to warm the legs. From there, long trails and moorland paths lead to Whernside, the highest of the three, with panoramic views over the Dales and the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct below. The final ascent to Ingleborough is a tough but rewarding finish, its summit plateau offering 360° views before the descent back to Horton.
While many hikers aim to complete the circuit in under 12 hours for the classic “challenge,” the walk can also be enjoyed over two or three days for a less intense but equally memorable experience. Along the way, you’ll encounter limestone pavements, rolling farmland, ancient stone walls, and some of the most characteristic landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales.
