About
Known affectionately as The Cobbler, Ben Arthur (884 m) is one of Scotland’s best-loved Corbetts, famed for its dramatic rocky peaks that rise proudly above Arrochar at the head of Loch Long. Despite not reaching Munro height, the mountain’s striking profile and iconic triple summit make it one of the most rewarding climbs in the southern Highlands.
The walk begins from Succoth, where a zig-zagging path climbs steadily through forest before opening out onto the wild, open slopes of the Arrochar Alps. As height is gained, the jagged outline of The Cobbler’s rocky summits comes into view—an instantly recognisable landmark.
The approach to the central peak involves a short but exhilarating scramble through the famous “eye of the needle”, a narrow rock gap that leads to a tiny summit perch with huge drops on either side. For many walkers, this scramble is optional—the surrounding summits still offer panoramic views over Loch Long, Ben Lomond, and deep into the Highlands.
This is a mountain that combines accessibility with drama, making it a favourite for both seasoned hikers and adventurous newcomers. Its character and rugged beauty embody the spirit of the Arrochar Alps.
