About

Rising above ancient pine forests and shimmering lochs, Meall a’ Bhuachaille (meaning “Hill of the Shepherd” in Gaelic) offers one of the best half-day hikes in the Cairngorms. This Corbett (a Scottish mountain between 2,500 and 3,000 feet) provides big views with a manageable climb, making it a perfect choice for walkers seeking a rewarding yet accessible summit. Starting from the Glenmore Forest near Loch Morlich, the trail winds through fragrant Caledonian pinewoods and gently ascends past the Ryvoan Bothy, a simple stone shelter nestled in the hills. Along the way, you’ll pass the emerald waters of An Lochan Uaine, also known as the Green Lochan—steeped in local folklore and one of the area’s hidden gems. As you climb higher, the landscape opens dramatically. The summit of Meall a’ Bhuachaille (810 m) offers sweeping 360-degree views across the northern Cairngorms, including Cairn Gorm, Loch Morlich, and the surrounding forested glens. It’s a sublime spot to rest, refuel, and take in the wild beauty of the Highlands.
