About
Lochnagar, or Beinn Chìochan in Gaelic, is one of Scotland’s most celebrated Munros—steeped in royal connections, literary legend, and Highland grandeur. Standing at 1,155 meters (3,789 ft), it rises dramatically above the dark waters of Loch nan Eun, with its famous northern cliffs forming a sweeping, corrie-rimmed amphitheatre of granite.
The classic route begins at the Spittal of Glenmuick, a scenic and well-serviced car park southeast of Ballater. The trail starts gently through pine forest and open glens before climbing steadily to Lochnagar’s northern corrie, where the full scale of the mountain reveals itself—craggy, imposing, and utterly majestic.
The ascent continues via the Ladder, a rocky but manageable path that skirts the edge of the cliffs and leads to the plateau summit. From the cairn, you're treated to vast Highland views—Mount Keen, Ben Avon, and the White Mounth range roll away into the distance, while Lochnagar’s dark corrie lies far below.
Descending via Glas Allt takes you past the Glas Allt Falls, a picturesque cascade tumbling down to Loch Muick, completing a superb highland circuit rich in drama and diversity. It’s no wonder Lochnagar was a favourite of Queen Victoria and the setting for Prince Charles’ children’s story The Old Man of Lochnagar.
