About
Loch Garten, nestled within the ancient Caledonian pine forest of Abernethy, is one of the most tranquil and wildlife-rich spots in the Cairngorms National Park. Known as the home of the RSPB Osprey Centre, it has become a symbol of conservation success, where ospreys first returned to breed in Scotland in the 1950s after years of absence.
A network of peaceful trails leads through towering Scots pines, heather, and birch woodland, opening out to views across the loch’s calm waters. In summer, visitors may glimpse ospreys diving dramatically for fish, while the forest is alive with red squirrels, crested tits, and dragonflies. In autumn, the landscape glows with golden colours, and in winter, the stillness of the loch framed by snow-dusted trees creates a serene Highland scene.
The main path to the loch from the Nature Centre is short and accessible, making it suitable for families and those looking for a gentle walk. Longer loops can be taken through the Abernethy Forest for a deeper immersion in this rare and beautiful habitat.
