About
Widely regarded as one of the most dramatic mountains in Scotland, Liathach (Gaelic for the grey one) dominates Glen Torridon with its towering sandstone walls and razor-edged ridge. Rising to 1,055 m (3,461 ft), this giant offers one of the most challenging and exhilarating ridge traverses in the Highlands.
The full traverse links two Munros—Spidean a’ Choire Lèith and Mullach an Rathain—with a thrilling journey across Liathach’s serrated spine. The highlight is the series of jagged pinnacles, the Am Fasarinen pinnacles, which demand scrambling skills and a steady head for heights. For those less confident, there is a bypass path, though it still requires care.
From the ridge, the views are simply breathtaking: across to Beinn Eighe and Beinn Alligin, over the wild corries plunging into Glen Torridon, and out to the sea and Hebridean islands. On a clear day, the panorama is among the most awe-inspiring in Scotland.
Liathach is not to be underestimated—steep ascents, long exposure, and complex terrain make this a mountain for experienced walkers only. But for those prepared, it delivers one of the most rewarding and unforgettable ridge walks in the country.
