About
The Five Sisters of Kintail form one of the most famous ridgelines in Scotland—five sharp, dramatic peaks rising above Loch Duich in the Northwest Highlands. Their serrated skyline is iconic when seen from Shiel Bridge or the road towards Skye, and tackling the ridge is one of the great classic walks of the Highlands.
The full traverse is a demanding but unforgettable outing, linking three Munros—Sgùrr na Ciste Duibhe, Sgùrr na Càrnach, and Sgùrr Fhuaran—along with two other prominent peaks that give the range its “five sisters” name. The route involves steep ascents, rocky ridges, and sustained effort, but the rewards are immense.
From the ridge, the views are some of the finest in Scotland: west to the Isle of Skye, north to Glen Shiel and the mountains of Torridon, and east towards Loch Cluanie. On a clear day, the panorama of peaks and sea lochs is almost unmatched.
Many walkers choose to start from the Cluanie Inn and finish near Shiel Bridge, arranging transport or a second car, though shorter out-and-back options are possible. The Five Sisters demand respect and stamina, but few ridge walks in Scotland compare for sheer drama.
