About
At 1,345 m (4,413 ft), Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in Britain and one of the great achievements for any walker. Towering above the Highland town of Fort William, this mighty peak rewards those who make the climb with unforgettable views, dramatic landscapes, and a true sense of accomplishment.
The most popular route is the Mountain Path (also called the Tourist Route or Pony Track), beginning at the Glen Nevis Visitor Centre. It climbs gradually on a zig-zagging path, first across grassy slopes and later over rocky terrain. As you gain height, the views open up—west towards the sea at Loch Linnhe, across Glen Nevis, and on clear days, as far as the Inner Hebrides.
The summit plateau has a stark, Arctic feel, often snow-covered well into summer. At the top, a trig point, old observatory ruins, and sweeping vistas greet you—on the clearest days, you can see across much of the Highlands and even to Ireland.
For experienced climbers, Ben Nevis also offers more demanding ascents, such as the Carn Mor Dearg Arete, a thrilling ridge walk with breathtaking exposure.
