About
Standing proudly at 1,174 metres (3,852 ft), Ben More is the highest mountain in the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park and one of the most prominent peaks in southern Scotland. Its name translates from Gaelic as “the great mountain,” a fitting title for this rugged Munro that dominates the landscape around Crianlarich.
The classic ascent begins from the A85 near Benmore Farm and climbs steeply from the start, rising relentlessly over grassy slopes with only brief moments of respite. Though the route is straightforward in terms of navigation, the continuous gradient makes it a serious physical challenge. As you gain height, expansive views open out across the Southern Highlands, with neighbouring Munros like Stob Binnein close at hand and on clear days, vistas stretching towards Loch Lomond and Ben Nevis.
At the summit, a large cairn marks the top, where the rewards are truly breathtaking—wide panoramas of rugged ridges, deep glens, and countless lochs glinting in the distance. The mountain’s unspoilt character and sheer size give it a wild, majestic feel, despite its proximity to Crianlarich.
